For 2025…. Johnny is under commission and/or developing projects with the BBC, Dundee Rep Theatre, National Theatre of Scotland, Macrobert and Tron Theatre.  He is developing a range of TV and film projects with Fable Pictures and FreeAtLast TV. After the success of it’s UK run, 101 Dalmatians will take to London’s West End; a new production of smash-hit show No Love Songs will tour across Australia, as well as the original production opening in New York. Christmas will see productions of Gallus In Weegieland Weans In The Wood at both Tron Theatre and Macrobert Arts Centre respectively. Johnny currently holds the position of Reader, lecturing on the MLitt Playwriting and Screenwriting course at St Andrews University. 

As a writer…. As an author of over 50 professional theatre and opera productions, his work includes the award winning Wendy Hoose, The Incredible Adventures of See Thru Sam and The Joke. He was nominated for the Royal Television Society Scotland Best Writer 2023, with his anniversary episode of River City winning Best Drama. For several years he worked as part of the core writing team for BBC’s Drama River City (with 48+ hours under his belt), with additional TV credits including Queen Of The New Year and Holby City. Johnny has been described as the ‘vanguard of post-modernist panto’, with over 32 productions under his belt, multiple Panto UK Awards and nominations. 

As a director….. he was Co-Artistic Director of Random Accomplice Theatre Company and toured work across the UK and further afield including New York, Prague, Spain, Hong Kong and Singapore. As a freelance director he has worked for many theatre companies including Edinburgh International Festival, National Theatre of Scotland, Dundee Rep, Perth Horsecross, Tron Theatre, Macrobert and Scottish Opera. He served as Associate Artist at National Theatre of Scotland from 2021-2024. His recent productions of Philip Ridley’s Radiant Vermin and Peter Panto, both received incredible 5-star press reviews. 

As an educator… Johnny has had several educational resources published by Scottish Opera, has taken the role as Lead Artist in multiple CPD Primary and Secondary Teaching modules. He also served as Senior Tutor for RCS Youthworks programme, responsible for the co-ordination and appraisal of curriculum for over 300 young people and 22 tutors. His Cameron Lecture (She’s Behind You) was re-imagined for Glasgow’s Pavilion Theatre playing to a packed audience. 

As a performer… Johnny pretty much just plays himself. Sometimes in lipstick. He once got told his fat suit was ‘cute’ by an audience member. He wasn’t wearing a fat suit.
